A Guide To Adhesive Primers, Activators, and Accelerators

March 3, 2026

Adhesives have become essential across modern industries, from electronics assembly and automotive manufacturing to construction and general fabrication. That said, simply choosing a high-quality product does not always guarantee a high-quality bond.

Industry professionals quickly discover that performance depends just as much on surface preparation and curing conditions as it does on the adhesive itself. Primers, activators, and accelerators are valuable.

Supporting products in an adhesive system improve bond strength, durability, and cure time. Other times, they are unnecessary. At JAM Industrial Supply, we help you understand when to (and when not to) use each one to boost efficiency while preventing failures, rework, and downtime.

What Are Adhesive Primers?

Adhesive primers are thin coatings that help the adhesive grab onto the material more effectively. They enhance how the adhesive spreads across the surface, a process called “wetting out.” When an adhesive wets out properly, it forms a more uniform and reliable bond.

Some materials, especially plastics, are notoriously difficult to bond. Polyolefins like polypropylene and polyethylene have very low surface energy, which means adhesives naturally bead up rather than spread out. A primer solves this problem by modifying the chemistry.

Primers also contain a relatively high amount of solid material. These solids fill microscopic pores and smooth tiny surface irregularities.

However, primers are not universal. For instance, a primer for polyolefins may not perform well on nylon or composite materials. Adhesives themselves often require specific primers. A primer formulated for cyanoacrylate may not improve and could even hinder bonding with a UV-curable adhesive.

Applying primers is straightforward. Surfaces should be clean, dry, stable, and free of oils, dust, and loose particles. Interestingly, if the surface is already spotless and non-porous, a primer is often discouraged.

3M Adhesive Primers

3M adhesive primers are widely recognized as market leaders for their consistency and compatibility with a wide range of materials. For example, 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Instant Adhesive Primer AC77 helps adhesives stick to polypropylene, polyethylene, TPO, UHMW, and PTFE.

Another option, 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Metal Primer 3901, enhances adhesion to glass and metal. Moreover, it increases resistance to environmental exposure when used with epoxy and urethane structural adhesives.

What Are Adhesive Activators?

Instead of modifying the surface, adhesive activators prepare it and assist the adhesive in curing correctly. These liquid treatments are used on lightly contaminated, non-porous surfaces before bonding, performing three jobs at once: cleaning, removing grease, and improving adhesion.

Most activators are clear and evaporate quickly, leaving little to no visible residue behind. Simply wipe the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth in one direction to remove contaminants and evenly activate the area. After a short drying time, bonding can begin.

In certain adhesive systems, particularly structural acrylics, activators act as part of the curing mechanism. One surface receives the initiator and the other the activator. When the parts are joined, the chemical reaction starts and the adhesive cures. As such, activators are adhesive-specific.

3M Activators

There are excellent 3M activators designed for speed and reliability in demanding environments. 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Instant Adhesive Surface Activator is one that works with cyanoacrylate adhesives. This single-component product is best for thicker bond lines or porous materials.

What Are Adhesive Accelerators?

Adhesive accelerators are often confused with activators, but they serve different roles. Accelerators dramatically shorten cure time.

Apply an accelerator to the bonding surface before the adhesive, so that once you add the adhesive, the bond forms almost immediately. This product is invaluable when:

  • Fast production speeds are required.
  • Humidity is low.
  • Substrates are difficult to bond.
  • Clamping time must be minimized.

Accelerators can also enhance adhesion with porous materials. For instance, when you apply cyanoacrylate adhesives to porous substrates, the material may absorb the adhesive before it cures. Using an accelerator prevents the adhesive from soaking in.

Most accelerators are acetone-based. After application, the solvent evaporates, leaving an active ingredient on the surface. There is a trade-off, however. Faster curing sometimes reduces ultimate bond strength. In some applications, the speed benefit outweighs the strength reduction; in others, it does not.

3M Accelerators

Many professionals consider 3M accelerators among the best options due to their predictable performance. 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Instant Adhesive Accelerator AC113 is for cyanoacrylate adhesives, helping protect sensitive plastics from damage.
