Tips for Perfecting Your Galvanized Coating Application

February 20, 2023

Whether you’re looking for a way to add durability to metal railings or need to repair factory galvanization on your boat, DIY galvanizing is an affordable way to do it. The materials are easy to find at any industrial supply store.

But while this process is straightforward to do, it isn’t foolproof. Read on to learn some tricks and tips for achieving the perfect galvanized coating application!

What is Galvanizing?

Galvanizing (or galvanization) is the process of coating ferrous metal (steel or iron) with a zinc coating in order to prevent rusting.

The hot-dip method, where steel is dipped into molten zinc, is the most common form of galvanization. Electroplating is also used.

”Cold galvanizing” refers to applying a zinc-rich paint to ferrous metal. While it isn’t as durable as hot-dip or electroplating, it still offers more than sufficient protection for boats, small aircraft, and light industrial use.

There are plenty of quality cold galvanize products on the market, including the Aervoe Crown Brite Galvanize Coating-65% Zinc Rich.

Why Should You Galvanize?

By preventing rust, galvanizing can extend the lifespan of steel and iron. This is especially necessary if the metal is exposed to moisture, salt, or extreme atmospheric conditions.

Even if you own equipment that was galvanized at the factory, cracking and other damage can periodically occur. Cold galvanizing products allow you to do any repairs yourself.

Surface Preparation is Key

The most important tip for successful galvanization is to prepare the surface. Any grease or dirt needs to be cleaned from the steel. Use a heavy-duty degreaser and make sure you get into all the nooks and crannies.

Any rust or paint also needs to be removed. You can use a wire brush for this step.

You may also want to apply a primer before you galvanize, since this will help the zinc adhere better. Some paints have a primer included, so check the label and directions.

Check the Weather if Working Outside

Zinc-rich paint should only be applied in temperatures between 50° F and 90° F. Humidity should also be under 65%. This will ensure the paint dries properly.

You should also avoid any windy or dusty conditions. If too much dirt or dust is in the air, it will impede the ability of the zinc-rich paint to hold onto the steel.

How To Galvanize Welded Metal

According to the American Galvanizers Association, you should complete welding before galvanization whenever possible. This helps to ensure that the coating covers all parts of the metal completely.

When you are preparing the surface for galvanization, clean away any flux residues. These metals won’t react with the metal, which can leave an uneven surface or a break in the galvanization.

Check Drying Times

Using zinc-rich paint means understanding its drying time, sometimes referred to as “pot life.” While a full cure can take up to 72 hours, the paint dries quickly. This means it can clog an aerosol sprayer or become thick and unusable in a can.

If working with the Aervoe Crown Cold Galvanize Coating in an aerosol, invert the can and spray it for two seconds anytime you need to set it aside for more than a minute. This will prevent the tip from clogging.

If working out of a bulk can, make sure it’s properly mixed before applying since the zinc tends to settle at the bottom. Pour the paint into a smaller container and work in small sections. And never add thinner directly to the can.
